The Undistracted King

Proverbs 4:25-27
A kingfisher sitting on a branch can stay still for so long, you might think one was a colourful statue, rather than a real bird. Their bodies might be still, but their minds are alive! With their incredible eyes, they see in far more detail than humans do. When they spot a flash of movement, they dive headfirst into the river and quick as a flash, they are right back up on the branch, with a tasty fishy prize.
You might be surprised to learn that most hunting animals don’t succeed very often. Even big, fierce polar bears catch only one out of every ten seals they chase. But not the kingfisher - they catch a meal nine out of every ten attempts. Their secret is that they know what they want, they know how to get it, and they cannot be distracted from their purpose.
We humans are not naturally as patient as kingfishers. We get easily distracted, and we want everything right now! But this can cause us to waste our energy and miss golden opportunities. Learning to ignore distractions and focus like kingfishers is an important key to fulfilling our goals in life.
